Living Domestically

Blake and I have formed the very bad habit of going out to eat...all the time. This is such a bad habit for so many reasons. We tell ourselves that because we both work full time and are both in school, that it is okay to spend the money (and calories) eating out - it's really our only option, right? No!

At the end of last week we decided that it was time to put a stop to it! So, Sunday I went domestic! (Blake's words - not mine) I planned the weeks meals (including lunches and meals for the nights we are in class) and went to work in the kitchen. After HOURS of cooking I had a meal made for every night of the week - planned strategically to provide lots of left overs for lunches. The idea being that Blake could come home from work, put dinner in the oven and we could be sitting down to eat not too long after I get home at 6. Since the meal is already prepared, just needing to be warmed, there will be no rational for going out to eat. This is a good thing for us as we usually talk each other into Mexican food on a regular basis.

So far my meals have not been the healthiest. Sunday night we had homemade chili, Monday was chicken and rice and Wednesday we will be having taco pie. However, the left overs have been great (meaning less money spent on lunches)! Maybe in the next few weeks I will be able to come up with some healthier ideas.

I know we are only a few days in, so it is hard to tell, but I really hope my plan works out, long term. I really felt like I contributed to our household this week knowing that my few hours of effort saved us money and time!

  1. We are also in an eat at home state of mind, but a lot of times that means a grilled cheese sandwich. :)

    Taco pie sounds yum!

  2. Yeah for you!!! Stick with it. It will get easier. Planning ahead is the key. I just need to follow suit - as soon as I can use both hands!

  3. Good for you! It is hard. On the days I work the last thing I want to do is cook, unless I have planned ahead. It makes it easier when there is a plan in place.

  4. I think we have all been inspired to be a little more "domestic" this year. I love to read recipes and cook, but only when there is plenty of time to plan, shop and clean up after. (Time seems to be my issue the last few years). I, too, have tried to plan menus (thank you KLee for your example) and shop for at least a week's worth of meals. It really does help to come home from work and already have a plan and ingredients. Let's all trade some good easy recipes!
